The SIF organic farming project has been implemented in 23 villages of Tumkur and Koratagere talukas of Tumkur district. The project supported by Save Indian Farmers, USA. The project objective is to motivate and support small and marginal farmers to adopt organic farming and eco- friendly agricultural practices in one acre each. The project aims to create viable demonstrations of organic farming practices with famers’ participation. The project activities include training and capacity building for framers, soil testing, field bunding, vermicomposting, Jeevamrutha preparation, planting of fruit and forestry plants and preparations of botanicals for the control of pests and diseases.
Over 60 farmers are being supported to adopt organic farming practices. It is amazing to note that farmers are experiencing good impacts and quality outputs. It is evidenced through the following case studies that the project was able to motivate the farmers to adopt organic farming practices and sustain yields. Apart from consuming quality food, they are able to supply to the general public and thus helping achieve good health and wellbeing.
S.V.Ranganath Janupanahalli, Urdigere hobli, Tumkur
Mr. Ranganath is a marginal farmer with two acres and is engaged in dry land farming. He participated in training and awareness activities organized by Avishkar and SIF and adopted organic farming practices. He purchased a local desi cow with help from SIF. The local milk is in great demand, so he is able to sell milk at Rs, 60/litre and ghee for Rs, 1400/kg. He sells milk and milk products to Tumkur customers directly which helps him retain all the profit. He also prepares liquid fertilizers such as Jeevamrutha and Dasaparni with the cow urine and dung. He prepares vermicompost and uses it for floriculture and coconut plants. He shared that SIF organic farming project has helped him to improve soil fertility and reduce cost of cultivation.
Kavitha, W/O: Ranganath, Janupanahalli Urdigere hobli, Tumkur
Smt. Kavitha is a woman organic farmer from Janupanahalli village. She expressed interest to adopt organic farming methods after participating in training and exposure visits. SIF supported her to purchase local cow under the SIF organic farming project. This has helped her to prepare liquid fertilizers such as Jeevamrutha, Dasaparni and vermicomposting compost etc. She sells milk and milk products in Janupanahallivilage and getting remunerative prices. Neighbours are her regular customers purchasing milk, especially local cow milk for their children. “Cost of maintaining local cow is less compared to cross breeds. Milk and milk products are also tasty and healthy” explains Kavitha.
Chikkanaganna Duragadahalli, Urdigere hobli, Tumkur
Chikkanaganna is a progressive organic farmer from Duragadahalli village. He has adopted integrated tree based farming practices with crops, fodder cultivation and horticulture plants. AVISHKAR identified this farmer and suggested him to use organic farming practices. SIF organic farming project supported him for purchasing local cow. He is now selling 2 litres milk per day besides his own home consumption. He is also preparing liquid fertilizers, vermicompost and applying for crops. He sprays butter milk for the crops as growth promoter and getting good results. He is also selling vermicompost manure other farmers. He has become a model farmer for others in and around his village a supplier of vegetables and grains to Vasumathi organic outlet in Tumkur.
Jaganna Anupanahalli village Urdigere hobli, Tumkur
Jaganna is a small vegetable growing farmer mainly dependent on rainfed irrigation. AVISHKAR identified him for the project support and guided him to adopt organic farming methods as suggested by the project team. He purchased a local cow which produces 3 litres of milk daily. He sells two liters milk per day at remunerative prices in the same village. He also prepares Jeevamrutha, vermicompost and using for crops. He applies mixture of cow dung and water for the crops and is getting good results. He uses large quantity of farm yard manure and is observing sustained grain yields using the organic farming methods.
Mr. Venkatesh Lakshmitandya, Tumkur
Mr. Venkatesh is a small farmer residing at Lakshmitandya, Tumkur. He participated in training and awareness activities organized by AVISHKAR under SIF organic farming project. Motivated by the project concepts, Mr. Venkatesh came forward to adopt organic farming methods in his farm. He was supported to purchase local cow under the SIF organic farming project. Along with crops, he also cultivates vegetables. He uses liquid fertilizers for vegetable crops and is getting good quality vegetables. He does vermicomposting and harvests the compost once in two months. He sells vegetables on his own and is able to earn good income and supplies vegetables and grains to Vasumathi organic outlet in Tumkur. He rears small ruminants for additional income and is happy to be part of SIF project.
