Subhadhara village is located in the Hadoti region which is affected by drought frequetly and around ¾th of the population of the Hadoti area is dependent on agriculture & cattle rearing. The village having 150 Households, 1285 Population and village is tribal dominated thus more attracted towards indigenous technologies either in life-style or in occupation. Despite of its relatively high agricultural potential, past economic survey portrayed the area as having high poverty.
Barren & un-irrigated land resulting in non-productivity or less productivity always compelled the farmers of Subhadhra Village to migrate in nearby places of the village in search of earning. Just similar to other families of village, families of Mathura, Oddho, Devilal & Sri Ram used to migrate for 6-8 months in a year. With different types of exclusive initiatives for the farmers, HARITIKA with “Utthan Project” entered in the village. After 3 months from the starting of project these 4 families came back to their village for some festival, there by seeing new persons in the village i.e. HARITIKA staff they discussed about the project and its’ initiatives and shown their interest in the project. Then after all the 5 had done field bunding in their field, by forming their common interest groups, as these 5 farmers lands are adjacent to each other. one solar water pumping for irrigation purpose has been installed in the field of Sriram. Each farmer has contributed 4,000 INR for installing of Solar Irrigation Pump In the field of Oddho, green house has been installed. Along with this Sriram & Mathura had also developed Wadi in their fields. Now all the 5 farmers are irrigating their 14 acres of land with the installed solar water pump.
This year they have undertaken Gram and vegetable crops within their field and started to earn income within their village. This year due to availability of water they have not migrated.
According to Mathura;
“We don’t want to migrate from our village but it is compulsion for us as we are not even able to earn even our bread & butter within our village because although we have land but unavailability of water for irrigation makes all of our land useless. Due to installation of solar pump now we have sufficient water for irrigation that has made our life much easier as now we have started to undertake vegetables and less water intensive crops in our field. This year in Rabi season for the first time I have undertaken any crop in my field i.e. Gram. I am happy that now I have availability of water and also I have developed Wadi and Machan for vegetable cropping. Hopefully Wadi will definitely be fruitful for my family in future. HARITIKA & Save Indian Farmers has definitely changed the life of marginal farmers like me. ”
